Literacy Cafe
I wanted to share with you some of the strategies that we have been learning to help us become better readers. We are adding these to our literacy cafe board as we learn them. When we go to a restaurant we look at a menu and decide what we would like to choose to eat. When we are reading we choose which strategies we want to use to help us. Our cafe board has four headings. C= Comprehension. So far we have learned the strategies; check for understanding (am I understanding what I am reading), go back and reread (if I don't understand I will go back and reread, this time reading a little slower,) make pictures( I should always have a picture in my mind when I am reading), retell the story ( I should be able to tell the beginning,middle and end of my story) A= Accurcay. So far under accuracy we have learned cross checking. This is when we come to a word that we aren't sure about we ask ourselves, does it look right, does it sound right and does it make sense. F= Fluency. We have learned that in order to read fluently we need to pick books that are a good fit for us and we need to read lots and lots of these( voracious reading) We also have practice our sight words and read using the punctuation marks. E=Expand Vocabulary. In order to expand our vocabulary we need to tune into interesting words.

I meet with each child and they read to me. Then we decide together on a strategy they need to work on. They write their name on a post it note and put it under the right category.
 Lent
We have started to learn about Lent. We went to Ash Wednesday mass together and attended an all school prayer service where we learned about the stations of the cross. In class we talked about trying to do loving actions during lent to act more like Jesus did.
